The Commissionerate of Prohibition and Excise Department is a major revenue earning department of the State and is one of the following 4 Wings under the Administrative control of the Secretary, Home, Prohibition & Excise Department, Government of Tamil Nadu.

1. Commissionerate of Prohibition and Excise headed by The Commissioner of Prohibition & Excise
2. The Prohibition Enforcement Wing headed by The Additional Director General of Police
   
3. The Narcotics Intelligence Bureau (NIB) headed by The Superintendent of Police
4. The Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation Limited (TASMAC) headed by The Managing Director.

The Commissioner of Prohibition and Excise is empowered to administer and monitor the various provisions of Tamil Nadu Prohibition Act 1937 and the rules made under Section 54 of the above Act.
